Practical Color Theory

Practical Color Theory Masterclass

Finally become a pro at mixing and designing with color!

Let’s face it, when we start out painting one of the most frustrating aspects of it is learning how to mix color.

There are a lot of teaching techniques out there that I’ve found to be not much help in my own learning process.

So in this series I wanted to focus on what I’ve found to be the MOST effective at improving color in my work.

I’ll take you from the most beginner concepts to the most advanced professional level concepts.

Practical Color Theory Level I

1 hour 22 minutes (3 lessons)

Color is so complex so I find it’s best to break it down level by level. So these lessons will help you a lot as a beginner when it comes to understanding how to mix your own colors correctly.

In this lesson you’ll learn how to:

  • Identify the value of your colors because color gets all the attention, but value does all the work.
  • Properly use and understand the color wheel with the colors on your palette already!
  • Mix tints, tones, and shades of each color and the vocabulary of color.

Practical Color Theory Level II

1 hour 55 minutes (3 lessons)

It’s one thing to be able to match a color that you see (which is most of the time pointless in painting), it’s a whole different thing to learn how to DESIGN your painting using color.

At this level we’ll be diving into effective color stories to use in your painting, and dipping our toes into more complex topics of color like temperature and relative color.

In this lesson you’ll discover and experiment with:

  • Harmonious color designs
  • Bold and exciting color designs
  • Relative color relationships and temperature differences

Practical Color Theory Level III

2 hours (4 lessons)

For me the best way to understand the most advanced nuanced concepts with color use is to study old master artwork. That’s why I go to museums often to see the work up close and analyze pieces in depth.

I’ll walk you through what I’ve discovered in this Masterclass using old master paintings.

Here we’ll discuss:

  • How to use temperature changes to achieve more depth
  • How and when to use warm and cool contrasts in a painting
  • What is broken color and how and why to use it
  • How to get colorful whites and neutral colors
